The 45 kV peak output extends coverage to cable classes up to roughly 25 kV, whereas the 34 kV model is aimed at 5–15 kV cable. The higher rating also provides margin when the specified test voltage is above 34 kV.
By measuring tan delta at several voltage steps, the instrument detects the voltage-dependent loss that indicates water-tree ageing. Circuits can be ranked by condition so maintenance effort is directed at the cables most at risk.

The VLF-45TD applies sheath test voltage and selectable fault-location pulse modes up to 10 kV to condition and pre-locate sheath-to-earth faults. Precise route pinpointing is normally completed with a dedicated cable fault locator / path tracer.
